Herbie HANCOCK under fusion

If i should only a fistful of artists that had influenced me a lot on my "black side" i would keep PRINCE, Fela KUTI, and Herbie HANCOCK. Innovation, activism, research, rule breakers, it
can be enough reasons for me to feel these artists the way i do.
My favourite period in Herbie's career is running from "Headhunters" to "Rockit", this complete
decade that see him moving from jazz to fusion electronic sounds in funk.

Detroit legend Kenny LARKIN

Remember those years while producers where doing electronic music with real machines, not only computers. Wasn't the same. Kenny LARKIN was one of the living legends at this moment. He was on PLUS 8 in the early years with the massive compilation "From our minds to yours vol.1" . This "Manik man" is still one of my favourite ones, a good reason to share it down here.

Fela KUTI + Ginger BAKER : Afrobeat rules rolling on

This Fela KUTI song is one of the first i've heard from him around my sixteen year old. I was this kind of teenager completely involved in UK indie pop / US indie rock, already fond of noisy rock like SONIC YOUTH or MY BLOODY VALENTINE and other experiment stuff. But by the day i heard some afrobeat and discovered Fela KUTI, i've never stop to love this particular sound.

Going deeper in the Black President universe you can understand his political texts, involved against racism, discrimination, fighting against what white people did on his continent and you can guess what. And there are still many reasons to fight nowadays... Keep on fighting so.

Please have a special attention on the solo part, beginning at 2min54. One of my favourite music moments, forever.

Sweden meets Detroit, then meets Munich

Aril BRIKHA's first shot already put him in Techno history best tracks forever, it was signed on Derrick MAY's sublabel FRAGILE RECORDS. The magnificent "Groove La'Chord" is still played a lot by many djs and many crate diggers continue to look after it all over the world.

Christian PROMMER has been involved with Roland APPEL in FAUNA FLASH and also helped Rainer TRÜBY or Peter KRUDER in VOOM VOOM project. His heavy experience as a studio composer rejoins until he started the "Drumlesson" project his drummer profile. He has recently delivered his new works in an acoustic, organic way, tributing to some Detroit classics, including this Aril BRIKHA and a fistful of other special goodies. And gives us the proof that techno music is not only depending of the material it's made of. Enjoy it.

DUB TECHNO : Essential style

The story is still quite the same until BASIC CHANNEL & MAURIZIO began in early nineties to open this door in their approach. And it works well like that. Many producers continue this out-of-time story, this very rare material keep focused only on the basic elements of techno : "Time & Space". Dubby analog stuff. Timeless...

Closer to us, DEEPCHORD and ECHOSPACE offered many wonderful pieces in this style.
I can't live without dub techno. Essential music.

GRAUZONE, yes, them

I ever played this track, a lot of times, and mainly when people doesn't expected it to come in the mix. The effect is still the same : "Was ist das ?", oups sorry, "what it is ?". What you must know is this band was Stephan EICHER first band before he turned into 80ies pop success. Sorry to prefer GRAUZONE to the rest of his carreer...

An UFO, a free shot, an amazing rough piece, industrial, punk, experimental and with a real efficiency on the floor. Trust me when i say it. But please, don't play it loud in your car stuck in traffic with old people around :-)

I love Cliff MARTINEZ also, you too ?

Loving Clint MANSELL, i also love Cliff MARTINEZ since the first time i saw "Sex, lies and videotapes", the first Steven SODERBERGH with the very sensible ending track which was
closing this special and definitive movie.

In 2002, SODERBERGH directed again George "Coffee" CLOONEY in Andrei TARKOVSKI remake of "Solaris". The soundtrack was my night music to fall asleep for a lot of months. Can be yours also now.

Cliff MARTINEZ "First sleep"

I love Clint MANSELL, and you ?

Okay, now you will know that you can come from a pop band, The POP WILL EAT ITSELF,
and after that become one of the most inspired movie soundtracks composer. His name ? No one else than Mr Clint MANSELL himself.

Ever seen a Darren ARONFOSKY movie ? I mean "Pi", or the massive and memorable "Requiem for a dream", maybe "The Fountain". Clint MANSELL made the music for these movies. And closer to now, he create the soundtrack for the movie "Moon" with lovely Sam ROCKWELL performing in.

Ever listened to contemporary music, some Steve REICH ? Enough reasons to like this and just a reason to share this track with any of you :
Clint MANSELL "Welcome to Lunar industries"

Art of sampling : 23 SKIDOO vs CHEMICAL BROTHERS

Everyone remember the shock to the big beat advent in mid 90ies. The CHEMICAL BROTHERS exploded on worldwide scene with their energic formula. Digging deeper i found a few years later one of the original samples inside the "Block rockin' beats" and found in my old school vinyl collection the 23 SKIDOO track "Coup", a very funky track, white funk, even if they can be classified under industrial style, UK post punk. "Coup" was recorded in 1983 : wow !!

Enjoy this :
23 SKIDOO "Coup" (1983)
CHEMICAL BROTHERS "Block rockin' beats" (1997)

Sir Andrew WEATHERALL

According to many experienced ears, Andrew WEATHERALL is still one of the biggest legend in action behind the turntables. What he commited on less than a year, giving highest moments of what was called the "Second summer of Love" in early acid house context falling down on UK and amazing Ibiza, crossed with the baggy style, noisy pop. Still masterpieces for any music lover.

Here comes the three huge remixes from MY BLOODY VALENTINE, PRIMAL SCREAM and HAPPY MONDAYS he did between 1989 and 1990. Please close your eyes and listen, LOUD !!

WHOMADEWHO vs DISCODEINE

One of my favourite tracks, mostly played. Nasty groove and sweet strings on a perfect pop song, with DISCODEINE special touch on it : looking for more ? Please stop and listen, now.

WHOMADEWHO - "The Plot (DISCODEINE remix)"

Chris LIEBING "Bauhaus"

To introduce his new label project, famous Chris LIEBING delivers with Tommy FOUR this masterpiece called "Bauhaus", a dark soundscape for late hours. Felt in love with it.
Here it comes :

Ask for the original

Psychedelic bands, i like psychedelic bands !!
Many things seemed to be possible in the late sixties and early seventies, and this pearl created by The ROTARY CONNECTION belongs to this times. Minnie RIPPERTON was the lead vocal directed by Charles Stepney, this was 1971.

New Jersey house actors Kenny DOPE and Little Louis VEGA, already known under MASTERS AT WORK moniker decided to tribute the music that they loved with their NUYORICAN SOUL huge project and give us another play of this peace of love track , half a century later, in 1996. Who knows what can happen in 2021...

Both classics links here :
ROTARY CONNECTION "I am the black gold of the sun" (1971)
NUYORICAN SOUL "I am the black gold of the sun" (1996)

The REVENGE

The REVENGE is another very inspired artist who is following this balearic touch, close to Todd TERJE or Prins THOMAS, a man to follow, and this big classic of disco from ATMOSFEAR has received his special treatment, in two versions.

Here comes the full ATMOSFEAR remix EP link :

Todd TERJE is cult

Yes, Todd TERJE is everywhere on quite every good blog you can go on. It's such a good reason to continue to give him the exposure he deserves :-)

Then here comes a very nice piece, typical of the balearic disco touch, with a very funny trackname and one of his most famous one (among many others edits or remixes he made for sure) :

STUDIO - "Life's a beach (Todd TERJE's Beach house mix)"
Link here :

And yes, "Life is a beach" :-)

Krautrock as a way of life

What happens in the early 70ies for these fistful pf guys who decided to create what will finally
be known as "krautrock" ?
Many reasons and contexts can be brought on the subject, but i'll never stop to love the first
NEU ! track i've heard in my life, this one :

NEU ! - "Hallogallo"

PANTHA DU PRINCE : a perfect story

Everyone should get this wonderful story the man behind PANTHA DU PRINCE has made in 2008. A marvellous soundscape for inner trips, please get into it...
